On January 5, 2006 one day after Louis Braile's birthday, I attended a ceremony commemorating "Braille Awareness Month" presented by
Mayor Phil Hardberger of San Antonio, Texas. A proclamation was presented to Alamo Council of the Blind and they in turn presented a reference folder containing brochures of all blindness organizations and services available to the blind population. In addition, each councilman was given a 2006 pocket daily planner with their braille name on the cover, and a desk nameplate with their name in braille.

This ceremony was held at the Municipal Plaza Building located at 103 Main Plaza, in the City Council Chamber at 5:00 P.M. .
Below is the text of the proclaamation that was provided.
Whereas, Braille--the system of tactile dots used by the blind to read and write--is a truly effective and versatile medium of communication; and
Whereas, Braille affords blind and visually impaired persons the opportunity to achieve literacy so that they can succeed in education, compete in employment, and live independently; and
Whereas, recording devices and other reading machines and computer screen access software enable blind individuals to gain access to a wide variety of printed material, but are not a replacement for a medium which allows users to read and write independently; and
Whereas, January 4, 2006 marks the 197th anniversary of the birth of Louis Braille, inventor of the Braille system;
Now, therefore, I, Phil Hardberger, Mayor of the City of San Antonio, in recognition
Thereof, do hereby proclaim January, 2006 to be
"Braille Awareness Month"
In San Antonio, Texas, and
Urge all citizens to take cognizance of this event and to
Participate fittingly in its observance.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of San Antonio to be affixed this fifth day of January, 2006.
