Lisa Hall recently joined the staff at Northwest Vista College as an Independent Adaptive Technology Consultant in the office of Student Success. In May 2005, she became the first visually impaired student to graduate from Northwest Vista College, earning a certificate in the Braille Textbook Transcriber program, a one-of-a-kind program in the nation.
“It’s been a long-time dream of mine to work in Braille transcription,” Lisa remarks. “I find it very sad when people are not taught Braille, because that’s what enables them to be literate.”
In her new role as consultant, Lisa will write policies and procedures for students requesting special needs materials, and provide training to NVC staff and faculty on ways to improve adaptive technology and web accessibility on campus.
“It’s important for us to consult with competent and qualified users of adaptive technology who can help us establish best practices to make our technology accessible to all of our NVC community,” explains Sharon Dresser, Coordinator of Services to Special Populations. “Lisa is familiar with our campus, our computer systems, our processes and procedures with adaptive technology and the Access Office services. I couldn’t think of a better individual to help us achieve our goal of improving access for students with disabilities.”
